Grateful

Originals For Sale

$1900
I have always tried to be grateful to be surrounded by such spectacular beauty so close to home, but recently I learnt that lower socioeconomic areas are likely to have less green spaces available to them. In my ignorance I hadn’t realised it was also a sign of privilege.
How often do we take for granted the beauty that surrounds us? How do we make these spaces more common, available and accessible for everyone?
This painting is based on a section between Galston gorge and Crosslands along the great north walk. It is such a beautiful bushwalk!
Let us not take this privilege for granted and be grateful.

Australian gum trees intrigue me. I love their wacky shapes, angles and colours. I love that they each have their own unique story of the lives they have lived, battered by storms and fires, but uplifted by sunshine, each with its own battle wounds and scars. I find it intriguing that we love the differences in trees but so often dismiss and fear differences in people. Our beautiful Australian landscape is enhanced by the beauty of our unique and wacky trees. Let’s learn from the trees.

Our Scars

Sold

$6500
I have acquired a new scar, it is quite a confronting one and a challenge to me wearing it. It has caused me to reflect on scars and what they mean.

Some scars we may feel embarrassed about, or we may feel disfigured because of them and yet scars are a part of our story, of the journey we have been on and the challenges we have faced; the things we have overcome.

Scars are a sign of healing.

Gum trees wear their scars so well. Their beauty is only enhanced by the damaged caused by a fire, the fallen branch, the wind twisted trunk; they wear their stories so beautifully and boldly.

They teach me there is beauty and strength shown in our scars.

Listen to the Birds

Commission, Mural, Sold

This is the first mural I have done in 7 years. It was such a privilege to be able to do this. I really value how art can change the experience for paitents. For some people doctors offices can cause tremendous anxiety and I love when doctors care to help. The doctors I did this for, are some of the kindest and most caring you will get.

Look at the Trees

Commission, Sold

This one was a labour of love: a gift, to support my hubby and the kids in Learning Support.

School can sometimes be a difficult place for kids, especially the neurodiverse and I will be forever grateful for this school that understands that. They understand that sometimes kids need a safe place to escape to, to have a moment, to breathe, to be able to face the day again. My hope and prayer, is that this painting aids that.

Amongst the painting are all sorts of animals, quotes and of course a Lego figure 🙂

I hope they like it!

The Family Tree

Sold

I see trees like I see people, having different personalities with different life stories.

This, to me, is our Grandfather tree.
Under this tree all are loved and welcome. It doesn’t care if you are a bird, a person or a red back, brown or pink, immigrant or original, religious or atheist, gender defined or not. This tree welcomes all. Under this tree you can find rest, and shelter.
This tree can be OUR family tree.

This is a mixed media piece, with the background having prints of local leaves and grasses.

The Light in the Darkness

Sold

I used to be really afraid of the dark, even as an adult. I am not sure what scared me so much, but with time I have learnt to appreciate the light in the darkness. We are so lucky to have the stars and the moon, to keep us company and they are so breathtaking. We also have the privilege of street lights!
There are many beautiful gum trees close to me that when illuminated by the street lights seem to offer their own source of comfort and light. Their beauty is highlighted even more in the darkness.
It reminds me to look for the light in the darkness and to hopefully reflect that light also.

The background of this piece has been made impressions from plants, using charcoal and marble powder to press into the painting.

Berowra Creek

The lockdowns caused by COVID caused so many problems, but also gave us many gifts. One of the gifts it gave us was time. Suddenly we had time; time to spend with family, time to explore our local area in a way we haven’t before. What a gift.
I will remember this spot well, not only for the beauty and the peace, but also for the joy it brought us. My sons are adventurous and love to scramble and climb over all the rocks, no matter how slippery…well you can guess what happened this one time. A very soggy boy for the last hour of the hike, but what a place to fall in.

Benowie Track

Sold

When can we go again?
That’s what my youngest kept asking about this beautiful walk on the Benowie Track. He loved climbing over all the undulating rocks, and we loved the beautiful fresh clear water.

I was fascinated by this tree, with its rock entwined roots, that was thriving despite its circumstances. With the assistance of the life-giving water, it had made the best of its situation, adapted and thrived.

Too Much

Too Much (Lego figures included)?I know I can be too much.Sometimes I feel too much, cry too much, think too much, worry too much, talk too much, hurt too much.I know this painting is too much, but do you know what…it was really fun to paint, to play, to include Lego figures, to cause it to be too much.Sometimes I don’t like being me, because of my “too much”.But God has made me an open book for a reason 😉I also care too much and love to much, so it ain’t all bad.

I Don’t Care

Sold

This is a part of my splatter paint series.
Painting these is pure joy: I literally throw paint on the canvas and then paint what the painting shows me.

As an artist I long to please, to have others like what I do, to value it, to be accepted; but this isn’t always good for the soul. Sometimes we must create with no one else in mind, but to paint what is in our soul, without caring if it is liked, valued or accepted. To be purely free to be me…letting go of the expectations of others is good for the soul.

I Don’t Care: because I care too much.

Since finishing this painting I have added to it. I was watching a cockatoo, while on my morning walk and was struck by their audacity. They have this amazing care free attitude that I thought perhaps I could learn from. This one on this particular day, it was covered in mud, and it was having a feed on the nature strip and totally living its best life. It didn’t care less about me, I walked quite close to it and it just one about its breakfast, keeping a vague eye on me, but really not to bothered by my interest in it, definitely not bothered by it being covered in mud. Maybe I could learn something from the audacious cockies.

Lyrebird Gully

Sold

There have been some benefits to lockdown; one of them being more time to spend with the family on mini adventures.
This adventure was on the Benowie track, which is a part of the great north walk.
Let’s just say it was more of an adventure than we bargained for, but over the four hours we took walking, exploring and wandering, we were so often caught up in the specular beauty of the place. We were all drawn to the mossy rocks and the water of Lyrebird gully, where the kids took off our shoes and enjoyed the freezing water. I loved sitting there watching the kids, feeling still, when so often life is not.
What a privilege, amongst the difficulties, to have this time to share with family.
