This too Shall Pass

Sold

I have seen so much pain around me recently. The worst and most tragic aspects of life and it is hard to imagine a way through, at times, for those suffering. It reminds me of a kids book (We’re going on a bear hunt) that says, ” We can’t go over it, we can’t go under it, we must go through it.”
Can we be the hug, the hope, the love, the light for those around us who are suffering. To offer the hidden hope that they cannot currently possess, to be with them in their tragedy, until they can once again stand?
This painting is a response and a reminder that “this too shall pass”. That despite the burdens and pain that we and our friends may carry, that there is hope, in time, that the deepest of pain shall pass.

The lockdowns caused by COVID caused so many problems, but also gave us many gifts. One of the gifts it gave us was time. Suddenly we had time; time to spend with out family, time to explore our local area in a way we haven’t before. What a gift.
I will remember this spot well, not only for the beauty and the peace, but also for the joy it brought us. My sons are adventurous and love to scramble and climb over all the rocks, no matter how slippery…well you can guess what happened this one time. A very soggy boy for the last hour of the hike, but what a place to fall in.

When can we go again?
That’s what my youngest kept asking about this beautiful walk on the Benowie Track. He loved climbing over all the undulating rocks and the beautiful fresh clear water (which he sampled). I was absolutely fascinated by this tree that was thriving despite its circumstances and position (a good reminder 🙂).
This walk was much longer than we expected 😫 but one of the most beautiful we have been on.

There have been some benefits to lockdown; one of them being more time to spend with the family on mini adventures.
This adventure was on the Benowie track, which is a part of the great north walk.
Let’s just say it was more of an adventure than we bargained for, but over the four hours we took walking, exploring and wandering, we were so often caught up in the spectacular beauty of the place. We were all drawn to the mossy rocks and the water of Lyrebird gully, where the kids took off our shoes and enjoyed the freezing water. I loved sitting there watching the kids, feeling still, when so often life is not.
What a privilege, amongst the difficulties, to have this time to share with family.

I have always loved Dr Seuss, but only as an adult have I really appreciated the depth and profound nature of his writings.
As I was painting the beautiful wattle, I was reminded of The Lorax, and the beautiful truffler trees (before they were cut down).
How lucky are we to be surrounded by such beauty. It is breathtaking to see the diversity around us; even amongst such an unforgiving environment in Australia.

Black and White: a Grieved Perspective

Sold

I feel grieved by the divisions that seem to be growing wider.
I feel saddened by friends and family who feel alone, because they have different perspectives.
I feel saddened by discussions that can’t be civil and respectful.
I feel saddened and ashamed of the inability to listen and to hear what another is saying.
I feel saddened that we are not seeing each other as a part of the same humanity.

Why do we only see in black and white?

I feel hope that conversations can be civil.
I feel hope that love can cover different opinions.
I feel hope for the softening of hearts towards others.
I feel the grace that I have received can be shared.
I feel hope that the world we are experiencing right now will change.

I know that this too shall pass.

This is a diptych, each painting is seperate. The white painting is framed in a black floating frame and the black painting in a white Tasmanian oak floating frame.
The frames are hand made by me.

This crabapple was planted by the council and is so annoying, it completely blocks the path, so often you either have to walk on the road to get past it or you get slapped by it as you wheedle past. But it is so breathtakingly beautiful when it flowers. It is funny how sometimes we need these things that may seem cumbersome and in the way to literally stop us in our tracks and appreciate life.So life is pretty tough at the moment, we are all (in NSW) in a metaphorical winter, or even some may be in a dark night of the soul. But as winter passes, so do dark nights of the soul.
These barren times where the trees are naked of life and leaves and maybe you begin to despair; but then slowly tiny buds start to develop, small and hidden. Then more time passes and one courageous bud bursts through to show you life, to show you that ALL seasons change. The winter passes and the dark nights of the soul pass too.

Different is Interesting Limited Edition Print

Limited Edition Print

Print on paper

Signed and numbered on the front.

When I painted this I was desperate for stress relief and to throw some paint on a canvas.
As I was doing this, I was thinking about my boys and the obstacles they faced in life. They both have things that make them different than others and at times this has made life difficult for them.
This painting evolved into a statement to them: that what makes them different also makes them interesting. This painting is all the better for that one flower that sticks out.
Hopefully, when people see this artwork and they also realise that what makes us different makes us and life all the more interesting.

This is Life (Blue Butterflies)

Sold

This is a part of the “This is Life” series of paintings… Sometimes the troubles of this life accumulate on me, overwhelming me and overcoming me and I want a break, I want it to stop, to ease up, for the burdens and the pains to be lifted. But do you know what…this is life. It is easy to look around and think that others have it easier than we do, and sometimes that is true, but sometimes it isn’t, the pains of this life are hidden so often by a facade, that make us believe that it should be easier than it is.My family has had a run of one disaster after another, over the past six months, but amongst that there is beauty, there is joy and there is hope. This painting has been about adapting, healing the past, looking toward hope, but seeing joy in the day to day, in the weeds that have abounded in the rain, in the rain itself, in the birds that wake me in the morning. When I stop and listen, moment by moment, I can keep putting one foot in front of another and enjoy the journey.

Another Day of Hope…

Sold

Hope… a fresh start, a new beginning, spring to come…lessons to be learnt, patience to be developed, perseverance, resilience, family, connection, change…
This painting is in a series of what I call “Abstractish”. It is my sweet relied from the confines of commissioned work and trying to please. I literally will through paint on a canvas (this one with my youngest son) and then bring out the beauty that comes from it. The joy that I feel doing these paintings is immense and is immense.
I have recently added this Lorikeet, from a photo taken of this gorgeous and brazen lorikeet that my eldest son and I discovered when out for a walk. We came within a metre of it, but it was determined to stay and gets in nectar feed.

This painting comes with a floating frame (made by me) in white painted Tasmanian oak.

I am not the most commercial artist. To be commercial you are supposed to paint in a similar style so that your art is recognisable, I am not so good at that because I paint my life and my moods, so my paintings tend to go up and down with my life.
I did read a great article about the reason to paint the same things over and over…to learn from! What a good idea…maybe a good thing for life also?? Learn from past mistakes??? Maybe??

I always contemplate life as I paint, and I was really struck while painting this one in particular. If you were to come in part way through and check out my painting you would think it was pretty terrible, you wouldn’t see the process I was going through to enable the beauty to develop.
Our life is not simple and it would be pretty easy to look at it and think what a mess! Someone messed this up! I know that God has His vision and purpose for our lives, that He sees the completed picture and the process we must go through in order for it to be made complete.
