Abstract Self

Abstract, Acrylic Painting, Floral, Mixed Media, Originals For Sale, Splatter

I occasionally need to throw paint on the canvas to deal with the highs and lows of life and being an artist.
It is so interesting how one day, as an artist, I can feel on top of the world: the world is my oyster, then on other days, I can be crippled with not feeling good enough.
It is such a dangerous game, when you rely on people liking and buying your art to survive, but I have realised if I focus on that: on trying to please others, trying to get it right all the time, trying to be what others want or need me to be, then the highs and the lows are far greater. Where as if I focus on creating what is in me to create, if I just tell me story through art it is much better for me and I create better art in the end, even if it is a super wacky mix.
So this is me at the moment…splattered, all over the place, messy; full of highs and lows, full of blessings and speed humps, feeling a bit overwhelmed with it all, but always trying to look towards faith and hope.
A colourful, messy, mixed up, abstract me.
This painting is on a flat piece of canvas and will require stretching.
The image size is approximately 1 x 1.6m
Canvas size is approximately 1.175 x 179 metres

The lockdowns caused by COVID caused so many problems, but also gave us many gifts. One of the gifts it gave us was time. Suddenly we had time; time to spend with out family, time to explore our local area in a way we haven’t before. What a gift.
I will remember this spot well, not only for the beauty and the peace, but also for the joy it brought us. My sons are adventurous and love to scramble and climb over all the rocks, no matter how slippery…well you can guess what happened this one time. A very soggy boy for the last hour of the hike, but what a place to fall in.

When can we go again?
That’s what my youngest kept asking about this beautiful walk on the Benowie Track. He loved climbing over all the undulating rocks and the beautiful fresh clear water (which he sampled). I was absolutely fascinated by this tree that was thriving despite its circumstances and position (a good reminder 🙂).
This walk was much longer than we expected 😫 but one of the most beautiful we have been on.

Lyrebird Gully Limited Edition Print

There have been some benefits to lockdown; one of them being more time to spend with the family on mini adventures.
This adventure was on the Benowie track, which is a part of the great north walk.
Let’s just say it was more of an adventure than we bargained for, but over the four hours we took walking, exploring and wandering, we were so often caught up in the spectacular beauty of the place. We were all drawn to the mossy rocks and the water of Lyrebird gully, where the kids took off our shoes and enjoyed the freezing water. I loved sitting there watching the kids, feeling still, when so often life is not.
What a privilege, amongst the difficulties, to have this time to share with family.

Once-ler Wattle Limited Edition Print

I have always loved Dr Seuss, but only as an adult have I really appreciated the depth and profound nature of his writings.
As I was painting the beautiful wattle, I was reminded of The Lorax, and the beautiful truffler trees (before they were cut down).
How lucky are we to be surrounded by such beauty. It is breathtaking to see the diversity around us; even amongst such an unforgiving environment in Australia.

Black and White: a Grieved Perspective

Abstract, Acrylic Painting, Art with purpose, Floral, Sold, Splatter

I feel grieved by the divisions that seem to be growing wider.
I feel saddened by friends and family who feel alone, because they have different perspectives.
I feel saddened by discussions that can’t be civil and respectful.
I feel saddened and ashamed of the inability to listen and to hear what another is saying.
I feel saddened that we are not seeing each other as a part of the same humanity.

Why do we only see in black and white?

I feel hope that conversations can be civil.
I feel hope that love can cover different opinions.
I feel hope for the softening of hearts towards others.
I feel the grace that I have received can be shared.
I feel hope that the world we are experiencing right now will change.

I know that this too shall pass.

This is a diptych, each painting is seperate. The white painting is framed in a black floating frame and the black painting in a white Tasmanian oak floating frame.
The frames are hand made by me.

Via The Crabapple Limited Edition Print

Abstract, Limited Edition Print, Realistic, Splatter

Print on paper

Signed and numbered on the front.

This crabapple was planted by the council and is so annoying, it completely blocks the path, so often you either have to walk on the road to get past it or you get slapped by it as you wheedle past. But it is so breathtakingly beautiful when it flowers. It is funny how sometimes we need these things that may seem cumbersome and in the way to literally stop us in our tracks and appreciate life.https://kimneil.gallery/2021/08/13/the-crabapple-path-edition-print/

This is a part of my splatter paint series. These paintings start as splatter paintings, where I throw the paint on the canvas, and then develop a painting from the mess.
I love the idea of seeing what comes from nothing. Discovering what a painting will become.

Painting is two canvases of 30.3 x 50, total size being 60.6 x 50cm

But it is so breathtakingly beautiful when it flowers. It is funny how sometimes we need these things that may seem cumbersome and in the way to literally stop us in our tracks and appreciate life.So life is pretty tough at the moment, we are all (in NSW) in a metaphorical winter, or even some may be in a dark night of the soul. But as winter passes, so do dark nights of the soul.
These barren times where the trees are naked of life and leaves and maybe you begin to despair; but then slowly tiny buds start to develop, small and hidden. Then more time passes and one courageous bud bursts through to show you life, to show you that ALL seasons change. The winter passes and the dark nights of the soul pass too.

Different is Interesting Limited Edition Print

Limited Edition Print, Splatter

Print on paper

Signed and numbered on the front.

When I painted this I was desperate for stress relief and to throw some paint on a canvas.
As I was doing this, I was thinking about my boys and the obstacles they faced in life. They both have things that make them different than others and at times this has made life difficult for them.
This painting evolved into a statement to them: that what makes them different also makes them interesting. This painting is all the better for that one flower that sticks out.
Hopefully, when people see this artwork and they also realise that what makes us different makes us and life all the more interesting.
