It is such a privilege to be surrounded by the bush and the birds. In the garden outside my art studio, there are some beautiful grevilleas. The lorikeets absolutely love them and are often our alarm clock in the morning. They don’t exactly have the nicest song, but I still love to hear them everyday.

On The Great North Walk, there is this amazing spot where you come out of this dense, dark tree covered area and you step into the light.
As I battled through my overthinking this past week, this painting took me through the journey also. It really felt like I was in the darkness and I needed to see the hope and light on the other side.

This artwork is a response to the realisation of the damage that comparisons can cause in my life.
I am a unique person, created by God and I have something to offer the world that is unique to me, as do you, have something to offer, that is unique to you.
This painting was created by hearing all the voices and the negative thoughts of many friends, family and page followers. All of this heartbreak was written down, it was awful to hear and awful to see.
I turned it around and painted the back with pure expression.
I then tore it all up.
I long for us all to tear up the voices that hold us down, that keep us from being who we are created to be. Imagine a world where we were comfortable in our own skin. Where we valued ourselves and others uniqueness, where we judged less and loved more.
Sewing the pieces back together was the next step. Some were back to front, upside down, sideways, some thrown out. The rest was resown into a new creation, which, while carrying its past, no longer resembles it. The words no longer have meaning. You can not see the pain caused by these comments. We are now free like the galah who soars above the field of flowers.
Death to comparison

This is a part of my splatter paint series.
Painting these is pure joy: I literally throw pain on the canvas and then paint what the painting shows me.
Framed by me in a painted white Tassie oak floating frame.

I have always tried to be grateful to be surrounded by such spectacular beauty so close to home, but recently I learnt that lower socioeconomic areas are likely to have less green spaces available to them. In my ignorance I hadn’t realised it was also a sign of privilege.
How often do we take for granted the beauty that surrounds us? How do we make these spaces more common, available and accessible for everyone?
This painting is based on a section between Galston gorge and Crosslands along the great north walk. It is such a beautiful bushwalk!
Let us not take this privilege for granted and be grateful.

Each morning, we drive past a flock of birds feeding on someone’s generosity. It is always a variety of birds coming together to feed, and the sight always fills me with pleasure and such a reminder of God’s gifts to us.
It is such a joy, watching as the sun comes up over the fields and trees. A pretty great start to the day!
This painting was painted first on individual canvases, then sewn together to represent the various days, times and variations in weather and sky, but the birds unite them all.
How many birds can you find?

Australian gum trees intrigue me. I love their wacky shapes, angles and colours. I love that they each have their own unique story of the lives they have lived, battered by storms and fires, but uplifted by sunshine, each with its own battle wounds and scars. I find it intriguing that we love the differences in trees but so often dismiss and fear differences in people. Our beautiful Australian landscape is enhanced by the beauty of our unique and wacky trees. Let’s learn from the trees.

This painting subtly contains the bible passage: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

I love magpies! We have a family that regularly visits our garden. Most days I will see them foraging for worms. Their song is one of the most beautiful around. Every year they bring their babies back to our garden and it is so funny to see these babies, as big as their parents, squawking in the most unpleasant attention grabbing way, while waiting for their parents to feed them. I love these quirky birds. I love Maggie’s.
